Welcome
You have found your way to the official website of Mrs. Skillman's 3rd grade class. Here you will find some information about the curriculum, routinely updated blog posts detailing what we are doing and learning, along with any other announcements and homework information you will need.
Language ArtsIn 3rd grade, the students will begin literacy groups, where they read and study novels with their peers. Phonics and Spelling will be taught using the Open Court Curriculum, and Michael Clay Thompson's Sentence Island will be used to teach grammar. This year they will begin writing essays, and elevating all of their writing using strategies from the Craft Moves curriculum.

MathMath will be broken up into 6 units, each deeply addressing the 6 content strands from the Indiana Academic Standards. We will be merging the Everyday Math curriculum with hands-on activities from georgiastandards.gov.
|
Social StudiesThe 3rd graders will be taken through engaging and exciting conceptual units that are based on the Indiana Academic Standards for social studies. These include "Building a Community" and "Economics." Elections, laws, profit, supply/demand, and salary will be among the topics covered. We will also run a real classroom business, creating and selling a real product for a real profit!

HabitsBeyond academics, 3rd graders must lay a strong foundation of self-regulatory skills and study habits. I will be using the 16 Habits of Mind from the book Students at the Center to guide the students as they practice self control on all fronts. These habits are useful in all areas of life, so I encourage you to pick up a copy and incorporate them into life at home!
